What is a Hex Bolt?
A Hexagon Bolt, commonly known as Hex Bolts, are threaded fasteners with a hexagonal head shape. This type of bolt is made to be installed using a spanner. Hexagon Bolts are preferred for their robust shape, which makes them suitable for more heavy duty fastening applications. Hexagon bolts are also usually available in larger sizes than alternative fasteners.
Hex bolts are six sided heads that are the industry standard for fasteners with forged heads. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) A307 grade A bolts, all SAE hex bolts, and various other common specifications require a standard (finished) hex head. For specifications such like as A307 grade B, A325 and A490 that require a heavy hex pattern, points to dimensional tolerances for heavy hex bolts or structural bolts.

Length and Sizes of Hex Bolts
The size and length of inch series fasteners — is indicated in inches, generally fractional rather than decimal. Size points to nominal diameter of the bolt while length is just that—how long the bolt is.
Hex bolts length in size from 1/4" to 4" in diameter; 1/4" to 1 1/2" sizes are widely available.
Lengths range from 3/8" to 24"; 1/2" to 10" is typical. From 3/8" to 1", lengths are in 1/8" increments. Between 1" and 4", 1/4" steps are normal. From 4" to 8", lengths generally increase by 1/2". Longer than 8", expect 2" steps. Length is evaluated from the under head bearing surface to the extreme point that is threaded at end of the bolt.
Larger lengths are not constructed in short ranges, similarly smaller lengths are not available in long ranges. Not all hex bolts are easily available in all sizes and lengths.
The bolt must be long enough to allow at least two full threads to extend beyond the nut face after tightening, which ensures full thread engagement with the nut. However, there should be two full threads exposed on the head side of the nut to make sure the nut can be properly tightened. More exposed threads within the grip the area between the head and the nut will result in a "springier" bolt. It is also recommended that threads should not be in the shear planes.

Applications of Hex Bolts
Hex bolts might be used for many different applications that include fastening wood, steel, and other construction materials for projects such as docks, bridges, highway structures, and buildings. Hex bolts with forged heads are also widely used as headed anchor bolts.
