What Is Dowel Bar, Their Purpose, Uses and Advantages?
What is dowel bar?
A dowel bar is a way of strengthening the cracks in highway concrete pavement by putting the steel dowel bars in the slots cut across the cracks. It is a method by which several U.S. states' departments of transportation have successfully used to repair the address faulting in the older jointed plain concrete pavements. The typical method is to saw cut and to jackhammer the slots for the dowel bars. Following is the placement of dowel bars in the slots and then typically back-filling with a non-shrinking concrete mixture, and the pavement is diamond-ground to restore the smoothness of highway concrete pavement.
What is the purpose of dowel bars?
• The purpose of the dowel bars is to transfer the load from one slab to another slab which is adjacent to the first one in such a way that the two slabs move together which reduces the impact loading developed by the slabs by their independent movements.
• They reduce joint faulting and the corner cracking.
• They also improve the strength of concrete pavement joints.
Where do we use the dowel bars?
Dowel bars are used in the areas where there is a possibility that they might be extended in the future. Examples of such areas are columns, staircase and slabs.
Where are dowel bars placed?
• Dowel bars should always be parallel to the center line.
• New slots should be made so that at least one half of the dowel bar can be on the each side of the crack or joint.
What are the advantages of dowel bars?
• Dowel bars decreases deflection and stress
• Bars increases the load carrying of the concrete slabs.
• It strengthens the concrete pavement life.
